what we need to know

- Algebra tiles can be used to add and subtract integers. The concept of ZERO PAIRS allows us to do that.
- Remember that the square tiles represent integers: a yellow square is + 1, and a red square is - 1.
- When working with algebra tiles: WHATEVER YOU BRING TO ONE SIDE, YOU MUST BRING TO THE OTHER SIDE.

Here are the easy rules to add integers. Son muy fáciles, y si las siguen, no tendrán ningún problema:
1. Model the first integer using tiles. Modela el primer número con las baldosas.
2. Model the second integer using tiles. Modela el segundo número con las baldosas.
3. MAKE ZERO PAIRS. Agrupa las baldosas en "pares cero".
4. Eliminate the ZERO PAIRS. Elimina los pares ceros.
The tiles that are left represent your answer.
