Right triangles and hypotenuse
A RIGHT TRIANGLE has a right angle (an angle of 90 degrees). In the picture of a right triangle that follows, you may notice that the sides that make the right angle are called LEGS, and the side directly in front of the right angle is called the HYPOTENUSE:
The HYPOTENUSE:
- is ALWAYS across from the right angle
- is ALWAYS the LONGEST leg in a triangle
- For our purposes, the hypotenuse is represented by the letter c.
