Before we discuss how to apply the Pythagorean Theorem, let's review the formulas that you will be using:
In here, c is the hypotenuse, whereas a and b are the legs.

To apply the Theorem:
 If not already done, dram the right triangle. You will definitely be given two sides, and sketching a right triangle will help you determine which sides are given, and which side you have to find.
 Make sure you assign letters to each of the legs, and to the hypotenuse.
 Once you identify the leg that you need to find, identify the correct formula.
